It’s so common. The most incredible results-producer is both a jerk AND a team leader or executive! This happens in lots of organizations, and especially in high-growth start-ups. Why? Because when a start-up is first working together, the person who is the most efficient and has the ability to do lots of things well, naturally rises to leadership within the growing organization. But there is nothing about being a great engineer, or writer, or marketer that naturally makes you a great leader or an emotionally astute team-player. In fact, quite the opposite is often true. But what should senior leaders do about these toxic high-performers? Do you fire that person and possibly sacrifice results; or tolerate the damage being done in order to keep the numbers?
